#Linux 6.16-rc7 is now available for public testing at https://kernel.org and Linus Torvalds says that "while rc7 isn't the tiny release it looked like mid-week, it's also not really any bigger than usual.." Happy testing!
I’m sick of fighting just to get even simple automated window geometries to work consistently and sanely with #Wayland.
So I went back to the roots and discovered there is actually an #FVWM3 now!
Perfect geometries. Everything under control. Lightning fast and light. And even sound is way better directly through ALSA.
Funny how it feels amazing for my computer to work for me again, instead of me trying in vain to work with it.
Tentatively agreed with my wife that I could install #Linux on her laptop…
Every time I use her laptop #windows has the CPU usage running at >95%.
It’s a lower end laptop, maybe 3-4 years old but realistically it shouldn’t be grinding to a halt with light web surfing and streaming…
Any recommendations on the best Linux desktop for a beginner?
Bonus points if you know if a free MS office alternative.
Attention #nix #nixos nerds who want to help an open source project that will enable more people to use and enjoy #linux at a VERY critical time.
I need your help!
I have have a repo for a #nixbook installer that I want to customize to make it much easier for newcomers to install.
I believe this is possible but outside my expertise.
I've broken up what I'm looking to do in 2 separate issues.
If you can help, I (and the world) would be so grateful!

Hey Mastodon, I made you a TUI. works in #linux and show images, navigate to links, search, and more stuff I'll eventually add down the line. I built this after the other two TUIs I found were either orphaned or just really behind on updates. pretty simple build that I've been working on when taking breaks from building my WM in the past week or so.
Some Linux users might be interested, reading about this (Subscriber link, that bypasses the Paywall, since I find this information important to spread for awareness):

„Linux users who have Secure Boot enabled on their systems knowingly or unknowingly rely on a key from Microsoft that is set to expire in September. After that point, Microsoft will no longer use that key to sign the shim first-stage UEFI bootloader that is used by Linux distributions to boot the kernel with Secure Boot. But the replacement key, which has been available since 2023, may not be installed on many systems; worse yet, it may require the hardware vendor to issue an update for the system firmware, which may or may not happen.“

Debian 13 (Trixie) is scheduled for release on August 9, featuring KDE Plasma 6.3.5, GNOME 48, and Linux kernel 6.12 LTS.

I don't know how, but while working on a raspberry pi, I created a folder named, and my brain just went "well, I probably created that file by mistake, I'll just rm -rf it"
So, being as smart as I usually am, I just ran 'rm -rf ~'
I've never smashed ctrl-c so hard in my life 💀
I think I am fine though, it's a raspberry pi so there wasn't much on it, and I just removed a few dotfiles.
It's looking like #linux #kernel 6.14+ will contain the driver I need for an intel AX201 on a #Debian 12, which doesn't work on my #thinkpad right now (no wifi! agh!).
I'm telling you all that for the context behind this question:
Is it bad/dangerous/unstable to run Debian 12 on kernel 6.14?
Further, should I use the Ubuntu kernel or get the "raw" kernel?

Was sind eure Lösungen? Der erste der Nextcloud sagt bekommt 100 Gummipunkte.
Here is this week's #Linux and #OpenSource News video. I have to plan a 40K battle so you'll have to watch it to know what's inside!
The first version of Ubuntu Linux 4.10, codenamed "Warty Warthog," and it was released on Oct/2004. Ubuntu brought the Linux desktop experience to many developers and IT folks for the first time espcially forlks coming from Win/NT/2000 days. They were an early distro to support ease of installation for proprietary firmware and drivers for network, wifi, and sound/video, and that made them very popular as compared to other distros. They also used to send discs by post. #Linux #Ubuntu #OpenSource
hot take, I feel xorg is here to stay despite its supposed technical flaws. i don't buy the propoganda that FDO is trying to "kill" it. they still maintain it, albeit with no new features, plenty of projects such as xenocara work with them and upstream fixes as need be. also, x11 is pretty dang featureful as it is tbh. besides, that enrico weigelt guy is certainly not "saving" anything considering his development track record.
Is there any noticeable downside to the #steam #flatpak? My latest #arch install refuses to play nice with the 32bit drivers needed. Specially the lib32-libvpx library. It's downloaded, it's in the Steam folder. It refuses to launch Steam. The flatpak is the only way Steam will load on my new install. #linux

One more screenshot of the classic MacOS 8/9 theme under XFce. Honestly, from all the themes I've done, this one I enjoy the most. It's rather convincing because it doesn't use docks or launchers that all modern OSes use, so it feels different.

I'm thinking of starting a YouTube (& PeerTube) channel about Linux, but primarily aimed at bloody beginners.
There are already some good ones, but they are trying to reach a broader audience and get a little too technical sometimes.
Let's be honest, though: I ain't got no time for that.
